Noord is the bustling northwest district behind the resort beaches, home to Alto Vista Chapel, the California Lighthouse, dining and nightlife, and the gateway to the quiet northern coves.
Noord is the large district that spreads across the northwest of Aruba, the busy hinterland behind the resort beaches and the gateway to the island's far northern tip. More residential and varied than the beach strip, it bundles together dining, nightlife, churches and historic landmarks with easy access to a string of quiet leeward coves. For travellers who want to stay near the action of Palm Beach yet explore beyond it, Noord is the practical hub.
Two landmarks define the district. The California Lighthouse stands on the windswept northern point, named for a steamship wrecked offshore, with sweeping views over the dunes and both coastlines from its base. Inland, the simple yellow Alto Vista Chapel, the island's first church, sits alone on a cactus hillside above the sea, reached by a pilgrimage road lined with white crosses.
Noord covers a lot of ground, so it rewards a rental car. Beyond the resorts you will find local restaurants, supermarkets and the island's densest cluster of nightlife away from the beach itself. The northern coast around the lighthouse is windier and more rugged, with dunes and rocky shores, while the southwest-facing coves stay calm and swimmable.
The district pairs naturally with the resort beaches it backs onto and with day trips north to the lighthouse and the snorkel coves. Most visitors base themselves near Palm Beach or Eagle Beach within Noord and head out from there for chapels, sunsets and the quiet northern sand.
A calm, white-sand cove near the island's northwestern tip, popular for easy snorkeling over a shallow reef and for sunsets beneath the nearby California Lighthouse.
A tiny, sheltered snorkeling cove on the calm northwest coast, with clear shallow water full of reef fish and an easy entry that suits beginners and families alike.
A rocky-edged stretch on the calm northwest coast, prized as a snorkeling and windsurfing base and as the closest shore access to the Antilla shipwreck offshore.
A small rocky cove named for its three steps down to the water, beloved as a snorkeling spot where sea turtles graze in clear, calm shallows on the northwest coast.
Noord is Aruba's northwest district, the busy area behind the resort beaches. It is known for the California Lighthouse and Alto Vista Chapel at the northern end, a strong concentration of restaurants and nightlife, and easy access to quiet snorkel coves like Arashi, Boca Catalina and Malmok, plus the Antilla shipwreck just offshore.
The California Lighthouse stands on Aruba's windswept northern point, named after the steamship California wrecked nearby. From its base you get sweeping views over the dunes and both coastlines, and the surrounding area is a favourite spot for sunset. A restaurant sits close by, making it a popular evening outing.
Alto Vista Chapel is a small, bright-yellow Catholic chapel set alone on a cactus hillside above the sea in Noord. It marks the site of the island's first church and is reached by a winding pilgrimage road lined with white crosses. The simple chapel and its peaceful, scenic setting make it one of Aruba's most visited landmarks.
The northwest coves of Noord offer the island's best shore snorkeling. Boca Catalina and Malmok Beach have clear, calm water and abundant fish straight off the rocky shore, while Arashi Beach is a sandier, family-friendly option. The huge Antilla shipwreck off Malmok is a highlight for snorkel-sail trips and divers.
A rental car is very helpful in Noord, as the district is spread out, with the lighthouse and chapel at the far northern tip and the snorkel coves and resorts elsewhere. Taxis use fixed island rates and can cover key trips, but a car lets you reach the quieter beaches and combine the sights at your own pace.
