A freshwater wetland and birding oasis near Palm Beach
A green wetland oasis just inland from Palm Beach, where freshwater ponds draw herons, egrets, cormorants, and dozens of migratory birds. Climb the watchtower for a free, easy escape into nature.
Bubali Bird Sanctuary is a surprising patch of green and water set just inland from the high-rise resorts of Palm Beach, in the busy Noord area. On a dry desert island where most water is scarce, these interconnected ponds, fed in part by treated water, create a rare freshwater wetland that has become one of the Caribbean's notable birding spots, with well over 80 species recorded.
The sanctuary is free to enter and easy to visit. A wooden observation tower overlooks the ponds and reed beds, giving a sweeping view of the wildlife below. Bring binoculars and you may spot herons, great and snowy egrets, cormorants, coots, gulls, terns, and seasonal migratory waterfowl that pause here on their journeys. Early morning and late afternoon are the most active and most comfortable times, away from the midday heat.
Because it sits within walking or a short drive of the main resort strip, Bubali makes an easy, low-effort nature outing between beach days. There are no long trails or rugged terrain, just the tower, the ponds, and the birds, making it well suited to families, casual birdwatchers, and photographers. It pairs naturally with a sunset on Palm Beach or a stroll around Noord.
For a different kind of nature stop nearby, the larger wetland of Spanish Lagoon and the desert trails of Arikok National Park round out the island's wilder side.
