Aruba 365
Aruba 365
Aruba's pyramid hill with island-wide summit views
Hooiberg, Dutch for haystack, is the green, pyramid-shaped hill that rises from the flat centre of Aruba and serves as a landmark visible from almost everywhere on the island. At about 165 metres it is not the highest point on Aruba, but its solitary, cone-like shape makes it the most recognisable, a natural compass for anyone driving the interior near Santa Cruz.
A concrete stairway of several hundred steps climbs from the base car park to the summit. The ascent is a steady workout, especially in the heat, but it is broken by landings where you can pause and catch the breeze. At the top the reward is a sweeping panorama over the whole island, from the calm leeward beaches near Eagle Beach to the wild windward coast, and on clear days you can make out the coast of Venezuela across the water.
The hill is covered in dry tropical vegetation that comes alive after rare rains, and lizards and birds dart across the steps. Because Aruba sits so far from any high ground, the view from Hooiberg is the broadest you will get without flying.
Climb early or late to avoid the worst of the heat, carry plenty of water, and wear proper shoes, as the steps grow steep and narrow near the top.

Yes. The climb is free and open during daylight hours. There is a car park at the base, and the steps grow steep and narrow near the top.
