Mangel Halto

Mangel Halto is a quiet, mangrove-fringed cove on Aruba's southeast coast that many visitors miss, which is part of its charm. Small wooden decks and palapas perch over a maze of shallow, glassy turquoise channels that wind between the mangroves, and a long reef runs offshore. The combination of calm protected shallows and a healthy reef just beyond makes this one of the island's richest snorkeling spots.

Beginners can drift in the sheltered inner channels among small fish, while stronger snorkelers and divers head out to the reef wall, which drops away with coral, fish and good visibility. The setting is natural and peaceful, with picnic palapas under the trees and very little development. The water is exceptionally clear and the mood relaxed.

• Entry is free with parking near the palapas above the cove.
• Beginners should stay in the calm inner channels; the outer reef is for stronger swimmers.
• Bring your own snorkel gear and water shoes for the rocky and mangrove edges.
• Mornings bring the calmest, clearest water.

Mangel Halto sits in the Savaneta area on the southeast coast, a good base for paddleboarding through the mangroves. Combine it with the shallow lagoon at Baby Beach further southeast for a full day on the quieter coast.
